Primary School Place Disappointment?
16th April 2025
by Georgie Hunter, Head of Pre-Prep
As both a teacher and a parent, I totally understand that this week can feel like an emotional rollercoaster. One moment you’re wondering how your little one is already old enough for school, and the next, you’re looking at a school offer that maybe isn’t quite what you were hoping for.
If you’re one of the lucky 93% who got your first choice for Reception or Year 3, brilliant, you can relax and celebrate. But if you’ve just opened that email and felt your stomach drop, take a breath. It’s okay. You’re not the only one and there are still plenty of options.
First, don’t panic.
Before you start drafting an angry email, pause. The very best thing you can do right now is accept the place you’ve been offered, even if it wasn’t your top pick. Declining it could leave you with nothing at all which really won’t help.
Once that’s done, you can:
- Ask to go on the waiting list for your preferred school. Places open up more than you may think as families move or change plans.
- Appeal the decision, if you feel strongly. Just be realistic, as appeals aren’t always successful and they take time, energy and are incredibly stressful. Check your local authority’s website for the process.
Then, consider all your options.
If you’re feeling unsure or frustrated with the system, independent education might be worth exploring, even if it wasn’t on your radar initially. Many families find that a smaller, nurturing setting with specialist teachers and a broad curriculum provides the support and attention their child needs to thrive. If cost is a concern, don’t rule it out straight away as bursaries may be available and independent schools are always happy to have an open conversation about what’s possible for your family.
At Highfield and Brookham, we welcome enquiries throughout the year and offer a warm, engaging environment designed especially for young learners. Our Pre-Prep focusses on confidence, curiosity and kindness which help your child flourish from day one.
This isn’t the end of the road.
It’s just a bump in it. The “right” school isn’t always the one you expected – it’s the one where your child feels seen, supported and excited to learn. Whether you’re celebrating or recalibrating, this is a big moment. Be kind to yourself and remember that there’s no single “right” path.
If you’d like to talk things through or learn more about alternatives like Highfield and Brookham, our Admissions Registrar, Charlotte Cottrell, would be delighted to help. We have an Open Morning on 10th May, so if you’re curious about the Highfield and Brookham difference, we’d love to welcome you and show you around. Head to our website to book a visit.
