Our Year 8s returned from their trip to the Belgium battlefields yesterday and today we received this wonderful email: “As one of the guides on the recent battlefields trip with Year 8, I wanted to contact you on behalf of myself and my colleague, to say what a pleasure it was to spend time with your staff and students. All your students were unfailingly polite, cheerful and fully engaged with the tour and represented the school in a positive light throughout. I’d also like to express our appreciation of the staff team and especially Mrs van den Berg. It was clear that all of them not only had the best interests of the students in mind at all times but were in turn liked and respected by them. I would be grateful if you could pass on our appreciation to all concerned and our best wishes for their futures. Exploring their topic ‘Life in an Oak Tree’, Year 2 took their learning outside. Lying under a beautiful oak in our grounds they explored the mini ecosystem it supports, from bugs to birds, and thought about what would happen if the tree disappeared. Last week’s introduction session was full of curiosity and enthusiasm, with pupils eagerly exploring big ideas through Socratic-style questions and sharing thoughtful reflections of their own. Rain didn’t stop play on our Tennis course today. Under the expert guidance of our coach, Graham Holmes, the children took part in an action-packed session filled with fun games, drills and challenges. They worked on developing technique, coordination, movement, agility and speed – all while building confidence and teamwork. The session ended on a high with an exciting mini-tournament. Our Bushcraft course is in full swing, with three days of outdoor adventure in our beautiful woodland. The children have been identifying wild plants, mastering fire-making, building bivouac shelters, learning how and where to hang hammocks, and gaining hands-on first aid skills. It was fantastic to see so many enthusiastic young golfers at school today taking part in our two-day holiday golf course. Under the expert guidance of the Liphook Golf Club coaching team, the sessions were tailored to suit all levels, from complete beginners to more experienced players. The coaches cover everything from grip and stance to swing mechanics like rotation, weight transfer and balance. We were thrilled to see three of our Old Highfieldians graduate together this summer from the University of Nottingham. 2016 leavers Ben and Harry (Politics and International Relations) and Meg (International Relations and Asian Studies) have each achieved so much, and it was wonderful to hear from them. Even more heartening is how their Highfield and Brookham friendships have remained strong, despite attending different senior schools, a true testament to the lifelong bonds formed here.
