Highfield Parent Runs Verbier Marathon Inspired by Family Bursary Legacy

19th June 2026

A Highfield and Brookham parent is taking on one of Europe’s toughest mountain races this summer, inspired by a deeply personal connection to the transformative power of bursary support.

Clare Woodward, whose two children attend Highfield, will run the challenging Verbier Marathon in Switzerland to raise funds for the School’s Centenary Bursaries Fund – a charity dedicated to opening doors for children who would otherwise be unable to access an independent education.

Clare’s motivation is rooted in family history. Her father himself benefitted from a bursary during his education, an opportunity that had a lasting impact on his life. Now, through her fundraising, Clare hopes to help extend that same life-changing opportunity to the next generation.

The Verbier Marathon, known for its demanding alpine terrain and steep climbs, represents both a physical and emotional challenge. For Clare, it is a meaningful way to give back and honour the role bursary support has played in her family’s story.

The Highfield School Centenary Bursaries Fund is central to the School’s commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive community. It provides transformative educational opportunities to children from families for whom independent schooling would otherwise be out of reach. Since 2007, the Fund has changed the lives of 23 children. Four of those children leave Highfield this year to continue their education at senior schools including Charterhouse, King Edward’s Witley and Christ’s Hospital.

Reflecting on her challenge, Clare said, “Education has the power to change lives, and that is something my own family has experienced first-hand. Knowing the difference a bursary made to my father, I feel incredibly motivated to support the Centenary Bursaries Fund so that more children can benefit in the same way.”

She added, “As a parent of two children at Highfield, I see every day the opportunities and confidence the School provides. It’s incredibly important to me that these opportunities are available to as many children as possible, regardless of their circumstances.”

Suzannah Cryer, Head of Highfield and Brookham said, “Clare’s story beautifully highlights the lasting impact that bursary support can have across generations. We are hugely grateful for her commitment and determination in taking on the Verbier Marathon. Support like this is vital in helping us grow the Fund and continue to transform young lives.”

The School has ambitions to grow the Centenary Bursaries Fund to £2 million, ensuring it can continue – and expand – its support for children who will benefit most from a Highfield education.
