Together we support

Transformational bursaries

Highfield and Brookham School is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment. Through our successful Centenary Bursaries Fund, we offer life-changing educational opportunities to deserving children from families whose financial situation makes a private school education unreachable.

In today’s economic landscape, access to an independent education is a privilege. We believe every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential. Since 2007, Highfield Centenary Bursaries Fund has transformed the lives of over 20 children. These children have been provided with exceptional academic and pastoral support, setting them on a path to success. The Fund bridges the gap for deserving children who may not have considered a private education due to family finances.

At 20 I don’t yet know all the ways the Highfield bursary has impacted my life. Its effect is on-going. My bursary was for two years but I think it will impact my life forever.

Purpose

Our focus on supporting children from a young age is deliberate. Research shows that early intervention is crucial for all children to develop a strong academic foundation and thrive in demanding environments. This prepares them not only for success at Highfield and Brookham but also for future opportunities in top secondary schools, universities, and beyond.

Many independent senior schools find that trying to widen access at 11 or 13 is challenging because by that age children from disadvantaged backgrounds will often not have a sufficient grounding to thrive in such schools. We are driven to bridge this gap.

A student body that reflects the richness of our society benefits everyone. Children in receipt of bursaries bring unique perspectives and experiences to the classroom, fostering a vibrant and inclusive learning environment for all.

Selection process

Key to achieving our goal of transforming children’s lives, is attracting applications from families across the socio-economic spectrum.

To achieve this, we partner with various organisations and charities, locally and nationally, that support children from disadvantaged backgrounds. These partnerships help us identify children who would benefit most academically, personally, and in their future prospects from a Highfield and Brookham education. These organisations, such as Royal National Children’s SpringBoard Foundation, Eastside Young Leaders’ Academy and East Hants Young Carers, work with children to strengthen their academic foundation or offer support to those facing challenging family situations.

We have made a life-changing difference over the last ten years to children from the following backgrounds:

  • Children who were experiencing social difficulties such as being bullied at school.
  • Children who had challenging home lives such as being brought up in a volatile household.
  • Children registered as young carers either for a parent, sibling or another family member.
  • Children on the edge of care or a looked-after child.
  • Gifted children without access to resources to allow them to realise their potential.

Our Centenary Bursaries Fund is highly competitive, we receive a significant number of applications every year for a limited number of places. Our robust selection process is designed to answer:

  • Would the child thrive here?
  • What impact would a Highfield and Brookham education have on their development, compared to alternatives currently available to them?
  • Are they the child who could benefit most?
  • What would they contribute to the school community?

Our goal is not to identify the most academically gifted children. Instead, we focus on creating a comprehensive profile of each child’s strengths, potential, and learning needs. This allows us to determine if our school environment can effectively nurture their individual talents and ensure they reach their full potential. Ultimately, bursaries are awarded to the children we believe will benefit most from the unique educational opportunities and support we offer.

Families of successful candidates must be prepared to complete our rigorous means-testing which is conducted by one of the Fund’s Trustees.

The deadline to apply is the end of January to be considered for a place the following September. If you feel your child fits our criteria or you work with a child who is a suitable candidate, please request an application form

The Bursaries Fund is something that has changed my life in so many different ways. It allowed me to attend Highfield and Brookham, where I found confidence in my academic ability, and made friends that I have taken with me even after finishing my time there.
