Together we support

Transformational bursaries

Highfield and Brookham School is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment. Through our successful Centenary Bursaries Fund, we offer life-changing educational opportunities to deserving children from families whose financial situation makes a private school education unreachable.

In today’s economic landscape, access to an independent education is a privilege. We believe every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential. Since 2007, Highfield Centenary Bursaries Fund has transformed the lives of over 20 children. These children have been provided with exceptional academic and pastoral support, setting them on a path to success. The Fund bridges the gap for deserving children who may not have considered a private education due to family finances.

About the Fund

Highfield and Brookham School does not have charitable status and is not captured by Public Benefit legislation requiring it to increase the value of bursaries awarded. However, we have a long history of voluntarily supporting children from a range of backgrounds and it is our wish to extend this further.

The Highfield School Centenary Bursaries Fund is a registered charity for the sole purpose of supporting children through bursaries which means that monies raised will never go to support the school’s operations or to build new facilities. Bursaries are funded jointly by the Fund and by the school. The money used to finance the school’s part of the bursaries is supported by the ancillary income, school fees do not contribute. The funding is carefully regulated by the Trustees who are regulated by the Charity Commission. This process ensures funds only get used for Centenary Bursaries. Charitable status allows the Fund to benefit from Gift Aid on donations from UK tax payers, and allows the tax payer to claim tax relief on the difference between the basic and higher rates of tax on the gross value of their donation.

How to donate

There are several ways you can donate to Highfield School Centenary Bursaries Fund:

One-off Donations

UK taxpayers can enhance the value of their gift by 25%. So, for every £1,000 given the Fund can claim an extra £250 – this is an enormous bonus and costs neither the school nor the donor a penny. Higher rate tax payers can reclaim unlimited personal tax relief on the difference between the basic and higher rates; donors can choose to redirect their tax relief to the Fund, thus increasing the total of their gift. The Gift Aid scheme only applies to UK tax payers but gifts from overseas residents are equally welcome.

Phased Giving

An annual, quarterly or monthly direct debit is also an effective way for companies and individuals to give their support and enables the Fund to predict future income with a high degree of certainty.

Gift Of Shares

Share giving provides the most generous tax relief available, combining relief from Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax. If you are thinking of making a donation and also thinking of selling shares, do consider combining the two: not only will the Fund benefit from your gift, but you will also benefit from tax relief.

Legacies

Leaving a gift to charity in your will is an amazing way for your generosity to last beyond your lifetime. Not only will it help the Fund, it is also tax effective, as gifts to charity are excluded from Inheritance Tax and can reduce the amount of tax paid by your estate. To establish a legacy, you should speak to your solicitor. They will advise you on which type of legacy is the most appropriate for you and prepare the will or codicil to achieve your wishes. If you are considering leaving a legacy to support our work, please accept our sincere thanks. It would help us enormously to know of your intention and we respect any wishes to remain anonymous.

Corporate Giving

Providing a company pays UK corporation tax it can claim corporation tax relief on all donations to charities, whether single or phased gifts. For a company paying corporation tax at the current rate of 25% the net cost of a donation worth £10,000 to the Fund would be only £7,500.
