Four of our Prep school children have cashed in their winning Giving Day raffle prize – lunch with our Head, Mrs Cryer. Put through their paces by specialist drama teacher Mrs Wilson, our Pre-Prep children had to think on their feet and get into character at the drop of a hat during Theatre Club. Walking casually around the room, the children had to stop and adopt a facial expression, display an emotion or interpret a specific role (such as a firefighter, swimmer or teacher) when prompted by Mrs Wilson. And we think they did a pretty good job. Year 3 developed their understanding of tuned and untuned percussion today with a variety of activities, including the ‘Let Us Chase the Squirrel’ game. Pupils took turns being the instrumentalists (playing the melody and glissandi on xylophones and metallophones) and singers (the squirrels and trees). The game had elements of musical chairs with the squirrels having to dart to a new tree when the word ‘tree’ was sung in the song. We’ve held our first informal cushion concert of the new school year today, with six children performing beautiful pieces for piano, violin and vocals. These wonderful musical interludes, which are held throughout the year, are a great way for the children to gain experience playing or singing in front of a small audience. With Year 7’s performance of Macbeth in Crawley looming on the horizon, the young thespians have been given some expert advice from Katherine Kotz of the Coram Shakespeare Schools Foundation. Katherine extolled the theatrical virtues of landing lines, entering and exiting the stage with purpose, moving downstage to engage the audience and keeping the stage alive. Armed with shopping lists, price lists and ‘cash’, our Year 2 children got stuck into a buying-and-selling challenge in maths today – with a little help from our oldest Prep school cohort.
